The History of 1000 Acres NY Horseback Riding Vacations

A Bit of Ranch History...

1000 Acres Ranch is a dude ranch resort, which sits on the banks of the Hudson River and is located in the town of Stony Creek.

Our renowned Adirondack ranch resort tradition of world-class NY horseback riding vacations all started in 1942 by Jack and Ester Arehart. Today it's still owned and operated by the Arehart family. For over 68 years the Arehart family has created a vacation paradise in the heart of the Adirondacks. It was often called the "Cadillac of Ranching".

At its inception, this historic dude ranch resort catered to a single clientele. Originally providing Adirondack lodging for about thirty individuals, this New York dude ranch has expanded to accommodate about 250 guests, offering vacations and Adirondack dude ranch vacation packages. Families are now the main clientele - a change that occurred in the mid 60's and 70's.

We had our first Adirondack rodeo here at 1000 Acres Ranch in 1949. The rodeo was on this side of the road, (where the basketball court is today). Between 1955 & 1957, we added calf roping to our events. Our barn was built in 1958, along with a new rodeo arena. It was around 1960 that we moved the rodeo events across the road (where our Adirondack rodeo continues today). Bulldogging was added to our events in 1963. That same year, Cowboy Jim Cavanagh started calf roping and jackpots with ribbon roping (guests involvement). These events were held between the highway and the railroad tracks.

The Red Dog cocktail lounge with bar and dance floor was located by the outside swimming pools. The "Chuck Wagon" fountain and snack bar were added to the Red Dog in 1960. Weather was never a problem at 1000 Acres. There was a tunnel that joined the two main buildings (main office & the Red Dog) so our guests could avoid the bad weather.

Our 9-hole golf course was added to the Ranch in 1971. Our beautiful course sits right on the banks of the Hudson River.

Unfortunately, in 1984 the Red Dog burned to the ground due to a lightning strike. The Red Dog was later moved to the main building where you can still find it today.
